3-D Virtual Colonoscopy

If you're over 50, or have a family history of colon cancer, your doctor has probably already told you that you should be screened for colon cancer. High Definition 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy offers an excellent screening for polyps and colorectal cancer for those who want the peace of mind without the need for anesthesia, extensive preps or invasive procedures. In fact, recent studies have shown that 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy is highly effective at finding the polyps that are likely to become cancers than conventional colonoscopy.

The Advantages of 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy:

  • A High Definition 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy does not require any sedation, which means you can go back to your normal activities immediately after the test.
  • The Virtual Colonoscopy is also much less invasive, requiring only a small rubber tip that is placed in the rectum to gently introduce a small amount of CO2 to inflate the colon. Then, two ultra-fast scans of the abdomen and pelvis are done.
  • Because CO2, unlike room air used at other centers, is rapidly absorbed from the colon into your system, there are no unpleasant after-effects.
  • Virtual Colonoscopy uses only disposable tubing and supplies. Unlike conventional colonoscopy, there are no concerns with cross-contamination or infection between patients.
  • Unlike conventional colonoscopy, with a Virtual Colonoscopy there is no risk of perforation of the colon, side effects from anesthesia or the need to take antibiotic prophylaxis before the procedure.
  • Patients who are on blood-thinning medication do not need to stop their medication for a Virtual Colonoscopy.

The Princeton Longevity Center has been offering 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy since 2002 and was the first center to offer this test in New Jersey. Our highly-trained staff has the most experience in performing 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy of any center in the region, ensuring the optimum in patient comfort and high quality results. Our radiologists at The Boston Diagnostics Center for Virtual Colonoscopy ( are nationally renowned academic and clinical experts in the field of Virtual Colonoscopy. Their unsurpassed expertise in the interpretation of 3-D Virtual Colonoscopy means you can feel secure that your Virtual Colonoscopy at the Princeton Longevity Center has the best sensitivity and reliability.

During a Virtual Colonoscopy, images of the colon are taken in just a few seconds and a three-dimensional image of the colon is created. Polyps and other abnormalities as small as a few millimeters can be seen and examined by the scanner.

Fortunately, most patients (more than 95%) will have a clean bill of health. For those few who are found to have a polyp, a follow-up optical colonoscopy can be scheduled to remove the polyp.

Studies have shown Virtual Colonoscopy to be safe and effective. With 3-D imaging techniques, the ability to see significant polyps and tumors is comparable, or even superior, to invasive colonoscopy.
